Key features of Kathak Dance
Mudras-
Mudra is movement often used as a prominent mode of communication in dance and expresses symbolic meaning through patterns of the dancer’s hands.
Bols-
Bols within Kathak dance helo identify and recite rhythms as a Bol is a sound or syllable. The Ta Ka De Mi method utilises rhythmic symbols borrowed from classical south Indian music.
Chakkars-
A Chakkar is a circle or spin used throughout the Kathak. These circular spins can be completed by a maintain of momentum, which can be increased through the dancers arms.
Gungrus-
This musical anklet is tied to the feet of classical Indian dancers and symbolises the dancers connection to mother earth. It also highlights the discreet but heavy footwork to the audience during the Kathak amongst all the other body movements.
Tatkar-
This is the basic footwork taken place throughout the Kathak dance and when resonated core makes a melodious sound form all of the foot compositions created.
